PREVIEW

Double champion Rick is out to keep his unbeaten run going but he has more challenges than ever this year.

Steve Dash is looking to put last years dismal display firmly behind him and has an outstanding chance with this being his favourite venue. Jason Hoare will not be here this year to try and go one better than last year.

Bear Barker has yet another go and he fancies his chances again. Don't write him off just yet, he likes it at Glenleigh.

The return of Jon Brummy Collins is interesting but it's going to take a real skilled effort to beat this lot. Dash doesn't rate him at all. Jon may just struggle on his first trip to the lake.

Then we have 2 new comers. Matty Barker enters with a great chance and is also sponsoring the match. His career is longer than a conger and he has plenty of experience advantages over the opposition. He hasn't fished a match with this lot before but you've got to say he will put up a good fight.

Gary Haley is a lot younger and has grown up around the Cornish waters. He doesn't show up as good as Matty on paper but he could spring a surprise. Gary has little experience with carp as well which could also lead to his downfall.

  HOUR 1

Rick and Mathew decided to bag some minnows right from the off. They couldn't see each other from where they were situated.

Bear soon did the same after he had lost a carp in the lilies just 5 minutes into the match, but Gary seemed to stick to his own tactics as he never had a whip for speed fishing and it was he who landed the first carp.

Jon was blank after an hour and so was Dash.

HOUR 2

By the end of hour 2 Mathew and Rick had moved off the whips and were now after something more hefty. Rick caught an eel on sweet corn while Mathew got his first carp.

Dash was at this point already in deep trouble with no bites and no fish. Brummy was still in the same boat.

Bear was not finding it easy in a difficult peg with overhanging trees but he went into the lead with a good looking carp hitting the net.

HOUR 3

Incredible ! Steve Dash quit during hour 3 with no fish, to the disbelief of all the other anglers. This was quite a shock.

Gary was ticking along quite nicely with steady catches of rudd but lost a couple of good fish when playing them. Bear took his first carp and Matty yet another. Rick took a 13oz mirror carp.

HOUR 4

Disaster for Rick as a hooked fish took him under the lilies and snapped his elastic meaning he had to change back to the whip for small stuff.

Gary nearly lost his rod when a fish pulled it into the water when his back was turned but he just grabbed it in time. He caught a nice carp well over a pound and a half. Bear struggled to get fish in through the lilies in his peg while Brummy was still heading for a water licking.

HOUR 5

Mathew kept the carp coming and anything Bear caught to catch up, Matty would get his lead back.

It was looking like Gary needed something very good to keep up with the others now. Rick was catching rudd at the rate of about 3 or 4 a minute. This match was going to be close.

HOUR 6

Bear was quickly running out of time to respond as Matty bagged another carp from the margins and Gary lost a good fish while playing it which could have given him vital weight in his net.

Brummy moved pegs for the last 45 minutes as he had drawn a blank. Rick continued minnow bashing right up to the line and surely must go close to winning again. What a great match !

Gary Haley did ok at FM 2001

 REVIEW

This was another great match with 4 anglers scrapping it out right up until the end. Matty did well on his FM debut, Rick put up another good showing, Bear to, Gary did well and will get better. Where Steve Dash goes from here is another story, he's got to sort his tactics out big style, I'd say Brummy as well.

  • Matty Barker - 1st- 3/1 favourite fished a faultless match to win by a couple of pound so every carp counted. Experience and the right tactics prevailed at the end of the day. He will be a tough challenge in coming years. 8/10

  • Rick Barker -2nd- Did brilliant to get second considering his best fish was only 13oz. Took real quick reflexes to bag as many fish as he did after unluckily losing his main rig to the lily pads. Finally beaten but a good showing none the less. 7/10

  • Bear Barker - 3rd- From the most difficult peg of the lot, Bear had a good match, probably his strongest showing to date but again he fell short of being the best. Seems to fish well without winning. 7/10

  • Gary Haley - 4th- The new comer stole the biggest fish crown and he probably deserved it after losing so many other good fish. Proved he has real potential for the future; a very pleasing performance. 6/10

  • Jon Collins - 5th - It was clear after 2 hours that Jon was still as bad as 1999 as he had the most fancied peg of the lot, I'm sure Dash would have killed for it !. Very poor in the end but at least he stuck it out for 5 hours. 1/10

  • Steven Dash -  6th - Probably the worst match performance ever. Gave up way to soon, he never gave his peg a chance. Plenty of questions to answer now after back to back stinkers. 0/10
