2005 REVIEW
The 2005 creme egg comp had a record 6 entries and was the first in 8 years to be held outdoors rather than indoors. In fact if anything it spiced the action up although the moths were out in force at times.
Rick Barker was out to win his 3rd title in a row and set off at a mild pace compared to others. Dean Tesco [ not sure of his surname but he works there ] went off like a rocket ship and soon took a commanding early lead by scoffing 5 eggs by the time most had sunk even 3.
Of the others, Julian Barker [ who jointly won the 2004 contest with Rick ] was happy to trail and watch the others race off. At this stage, the water was not being touched at all.
Dean was soon in deep trouble and was paying the price for going too quick and he was the first to pull up with just 7 eggs disappearing down his gullet. He has to be applauded just for showing up when many are just too afraid so well done for that. With him gone, that left 5 eggites in with a chance. Julian, Bear and Jason all had 8 to their names and Rick was on 7.
Julian then started to settle down and he began to look good. He quickly moved up to 12 with the others just behind.
At this stage, Jason began to feel the strain and couldn't go beyond 12. He finished in great style though when he swallowed the last egg whole but he wasn't sick !
With 3 gone, it was down to the big 3 of previous years. Rick was now on 13 eggs going slower than usual and Julian was suddenly looking rough after his 14th when he looked to be maybe going best. However, at the other end of the table, Bear was quietly storming off to glory as he cruised into a 15th egg with ease. Now it was interesting.
As Julian gave in and visited the outside toilet for a sickness outburst, Rick was left with the task of catching Bear who was trying to emulate his 2002 win when he destroyed the field in style. Rick tried to eat egg 15 as Bear was finishing his 16th !
Bear was now attacking his 17th, surely he couldn't eat another one !? Rick then levelled the scores at 16-16 and suddenly Bear was dwelling on that 17th and vital egg. If he ate it, Rick would have to eat his 17th just to tie.
Rick was now exactly level with Bear, both had eaten two thirds of egg 17 but both seemed ill to the stomach with chocolate and sugary sticky fondant. Then... Rick cracked first. He gave in and left the table to be sick all over the front garden while Bear was left with the comp at his mercy just like Rick last year when he couldn't quite see off Julian. Bear though...gave in as well leaving them tied on 16 a piece and both had to share the title. For Bear it was his 2nd title in 4 years, for Rick, his 3rd in a row !
2005 PREVIEW
Once again the CEC is near and although slightly late this year, there's no shortage of egg maniacs trying to muscle in on the chocolate and fondant action.
Last year was a real slug fest with Julian Barker looking a broken man at 16 eggs, his eyes sunken into his sugar filled skull and his belly struggling to cope with the mass of pure brown chocolate being pushed into it, but it was Rick Barker who spilled his distressed and tortured bodily fluids all over the Ashgrove House back yard. Rick seemed to have the win in the bag with just a fraction of his 17th egg to consume but it all proved too much for the 2003 champion and so the two produced the competition's first ever tie in its 7 year history.
For Julian it was a bit of a revival and he should stand a good chance this year however rumours have been
circling amongst the pigeons that he is trying to avoid the contest, hence the delay to this year's event. Julian though, has stated that he wants in and is ready to eat his younger opponents quite literally under the oak table.
Rick should be in good shape for his hat-trick bid and will be one of several enemies battling to do the much sort after double of being egg and fishing match champ at the same time and this has not yet been achieved to this day.
Jason Hoare probably has the best chance of completing that elusive double. The current fishing champ made a very decent debut last year, pushing his rivals all the way to breaking point even though he had fondant and lumps of chocolate coming out of his nose towards the end. The big friendly giant is as dangerous as a suicide bomber[ and that includes the fishing aswell ].
One of the old heroes is Bear Barker who has dominated this event in the past and still holds the all time record of 18 eggs in a single competition which brought runny sick straight out of his bunged up gob and filled the clean white bathroom sink. He hasn't shown any form in this comp since 2002 and it's hard to see him bouncing back here unless he thinks long and hard. His new tactic of supping glasses of hot steamy water while eating has so far been the worst strategy since Matty Barker tried eating eggs by swallowing them whole without chewing in 2002. [ and he blew up after just 10 eggs never to be seen again ! ]
You could almost say that Bear taking glory here would be one almighty shock. Well, of any newcomers to the event, maybe Matt Gump can make a tough fight of the battle. He believes he can do 20 with ease but he would surely be making that quick trip to the bog that has been done by several eggites in the past.
Emma White could be the first girl ever to grace the competition and girls and chocolate do go well together to form a solid combination, but, girl power wont be winning this, although she'd love to think so. Matty Barker is running scared of eggs.....still ! and Steve Dash never could handle his eggs. He'd love a whiskey neckin' comp. He'd win it hands down, just a shame there's more people into egg comps than whiskey pissing.
So to conclude this preview we have to have some form of a prediction. On form, Rick and Julian should be the ones to beat with Rick favourite for his hat trick but a close watchful eye is looking at Jason 'Beavis' Hoare who could surprise everyone. Gump is very interesting if he enters and will surely make his presence felt.
Date to be decided very very soon... coming this month!!!!!!!
